What is Gen Z?

Generation Z (Gen Z) refers to the demographic cohort born roughly between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, following Millennials (Generation Y). The exact dates may vary, but typically, Gen Z includes individuals born from 1997 to 2012. As of 2024, the oldest members of Gen Z are in their mid-to-late 20s, while the youngest are in their early teens.

Characteristics of Gen Z:

1. Digital Natives: Gen Z is the first generation to grow up with widespread access to the internet, smartphones, and social media from a very young age. They are highly adept at using technology and are comfortable with various digital platforms.

2. Socially Conscious: This generation tends to be more aware of social, environmental, and political issues. Many Gen Zers are vocal about climate change, gender equality, racial justice, and mental health awareness.

3. Diverse and Inclusive: Gen Z is one of the most diverse generations in terms of ethnicity, race, and culture. They often embrace and champion inclusivity and are more likely to support brands and movements that reflect these values.

4. Financially Conscious: Having seen the effects of the 2008 financial crisis and living through economic uncertainty, many Gen Zers are cautious about spending and saving. They are entrepreneurial and more likely to look for alternative income streams, such as freelance work or gig economy jobs.

5. Education and Self-Learning: While traditional education is still valued, many in Gen Z are turning to online learning platforms, YouTube, and other resources to gain skills. They value practical education that can lead to tangible outcomes in their careers.

6. Mental Health Awareness: Gen Z places a significant emphasis on mental health and is more open about seeking help for issues like anxiety and depression compared to previous generations. They actively engage with content related to mental well-being and self-care.

7. Entrepreneurial Spirit: Gen Z tends to prioritize personal fulfillment over traditional career paths. Many are interested in starting their own businesses, leveraging platforms like social media to promote their products, services, or personal brands.

Overall, Generation Z is a highly connected, diverse, and socially aware group that is shaping the future in unique and impactful ways.
