Google automatically sends security alerts (including email notifications) whenever it detects a new sign-in to your Gmail account from an unrecognized device, location, or IP address. This is part of Gmail’s built-in security features to protect against unauthorized access. These alerts are enabled by default, so you should already be receiving them unless you’ve manually turned them off.
Alerts typically include details like the device type, approximate location, time of sign-in, and IP address. They arrive as emails sent to your primary Gmail address and any recovery email you’ve set up. You may also get push notifications on signed-in Android/iOS devices.
Step 1: Verify That Alerts Are Enabled
To confirm or adjust your alert preferences (e.g., ensure you get emails for unusual activity like new device logins):
1. Open Gmail in a web browser on your computer (gmail.com).
2. Scroll to the very bottom of the page. In the bottom-right corner, click Details (it shows your last account activity).
3. In the pop-up window, scroll to the bottom. Next to Alert preference, click Change.
4. Select Show an alert for unusual activity (this is the default setting that triggers notifications for new device sign-ins).
5. Click Save.
If you want alerts only for highly suspicious activity, you can choose a stricter option, but the default covers most new device scenarios.
Step 2: Review Recent Sign-In Activity
To check for any recent logins and ensure notifications are working:
1. Go to your Google Account settings at myaccount.google.com.
2. On the left sidebar, click Security.
3. Under Recent security activity, click Review security activity. This shows a history of sign-ins, devices, and alerts.
4. Under Your devices, click Manage all devices to see a list of signed-in devices. You can sign out from suspicious ones here.
If you spot unfamiliar activity, follow the on-screen prompts to secure your account (e.g., change your password).
Step 3: Set Up or Update Recovery Email for Alerts
Alerts are also sent to your recovery email, so make sure it’s current:
1. In your Google Account settings (myaccount.google.com), go to Security > How you sign in to this account > Recovery email.
2. Add or verify an email address where you want to receive alerts.
Additional Tips for Better Security
• Enable 2-Step Verification (2FA): This adds an extra layer of protection. Go to Security > How you sign in > 2-Step Verification > Get started. New device logins will then require a code sent to your phone or app.
• Check for Alerts Regularly: If you’re not seeing emails, search your inbox (including spam/promotions) for “Google Alert” or “Security Alert”.
• If Alerts Seem Excessive: If you’re traveling or using a VPN (which can trigger “unusual” flags), you can temporarily adjust preferences as in Step 1, but avoid disabling them entirely.
This setup ensures you’re notified promptly for logins from other devices. If you’re still not receiving alerts after verifying, run Google’s Security Checkup for a full audit.
