What is Hanukkah security?

Hanukkah security refers to the heightened protective measures implemented by law enforcement and community organizations worldwide for Hanukkah observances (which began on December 14, 2025) in response to a deadly mass shooting at a Hanukkah event in Sydney, Australia.

Background on the Incident

On December 14, 2025, a gunman opened fire during Hanukkah celebrations at Bondi Beach in Sydney, killing at least 15 people and injuring more than 40 others.  The attack targeted a gathering of the Jewish community, heightening fears of antisemitic violence amid rising global tensions.  Australian authorities described it as a targeted terror incident, though the motive is still under investigation.

Security Enhancements

With no specific threats reported in most locations, officials are acting preemptively to safeguard public menorah lightings, synagogues, and Jewish community centers. Key examples include:

•  New York City: Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch held a briefing announcing increased patrols, surveillance, and rapid-response teams at over 100 Hanukkah events. Barriers and bag checks are also in place at high-profile sites like Rockefeller Center’s menorah lighting.

•  Los Angeles: The LAPD and LA County Sheriff’s Department deployed extra officers to Jewish facilities and events, including drone surveillance and K-9 units for bomb detection.

•  Miami-Dade: The Sheriff’s Office added visible patrols and undercover officers at synagogues and holiday gatherings.

•  International: Berlin plans to “further intensify” protections at Jewish sites; London and other UK cities are boosting police presence at events honoring the Bondi victims; and Israeli security advisors are coordinating with U.S. groups.

Jewish organizations like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) urge community members to report suspicious activity via hotlines (e.g., 1-888-INFO-FBI in the U.S.) and to attend events with awareness of exits and surroundings. These measures aim to ensure safe celebration of Hanukkah’s themes of light and resilience amid ongoing concerns over antisemitism.
