Apple Maps Offline Guide 2026

Apple Maps has offered robust offline navigation since iOS 17 (and later versions like iOS 18+ as of 2025), allowing you to download specific map areas for use without an internet connection. This is ideal for road trips, hiking, or international travel where data is spotty.

You’ll need Wi-Fi or cellular data initially to download maps, but once saved, you can get turn-by-turn directions, estimated arrival times, and basic place info offline. The feature works on iPhone, iPad, and even syncs to Apple Watch for hands-free use. Offline maps aren’t available in all countries or regions due to data restrictions.

Step 1: Download an Offline Map

You can download maps for a city, region, or custom area. Each download shows its estimated size (typically 100MB–1GB depending on the area).

1.  Open the Maps app on your iPhone or iPad.

2.  For a quick download: Touch and hold on the map where you want to start, drop a pin, then swipe up on the place card and tap Download Offline Map.

3.  For more control: Tap your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner, then tap Offline Maps > + (Add a new map).

•  Search for a location (e.g., “New York City”) or tap Current Location.

•  Adjust the map boundaries by dragging the corners of the gray outline to fit your needs (smaller areas download faster).

•  Tap Download. Use Wi-Fi for larger files to save data.

4.  Maps auto-update by default when connected to Wi-Fi, keeping your offline data fresh.

Tips: Apple suggests maps based on your calendar or location history. Downloads pause if you switch apps but resume later.

Step 2: Use the Offline Map for Navigation

Once downloaded, Maps automatically switches to offline mode when you’re out of coverage—no manual toggle needed.

1.  Open the Maps app.

2.  Enter your destination or tap a saved place. If the route is within your downloaded area, it’ll use offline data.

3.  Select Directions, choose your mode (driving, walking, cycling, or transit), and tap Go for turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation.

•  You’ll see ETA, distance, and rerouting if you go off-path (though no live traffic updates).

•  View place details like hours and ratings on cards (if pre-loaded).

Apple Watch Sync: Offline maps sync automatically. On your Watch, open Maps, and it works independently for glances or navigation without your iPhone.

Managing Your Offline Maps

Access all downloads via your profile > Offline Maps.

•  View/Open: Tap a map thumbnail to view it full-screen.

•  Rename: Tap the map > Rename, enter a name, and tap Done.

•  Resize: Tap Resize, adjust the area, and tap Download to update.

•  Delete: Swipe left on a map and tap Delete, or select it and tap Delete Map.

•  Settings (tap the info icon in Offline Maps):

•  Wi-Fi Only: Toggle to allow cellular downloads if needed.

•  Automatic Updates: Keep on for fresh maps (default).

•  Optimize Storage: Enable to auto-delete unused maps after 30 days.

•  Only Use Offline Maps: Toggle off to prefer online data when available.

Important Limitations

•  No Real-Time Features: Offline mode skips live traffic, incident reports, speed cameras, and alternate routes based on conditions.

•  Route Coverage: Navigation only works if the entire start-to-end route is downloaded. Transit schedules may be static (no delays).

•  Expiration and Size: Maps expire and auto-update, but enable optimization to manage storage (iCloud doesn’t sync them across devices).

•  Availability: Not supported in countries like China or where high-res data is restricted. Search results and business info are limited offline.

•  Battery Impact: Voice guidance and screen-on navigation drain battery faster—use Low Power Mode.

For the latest details or troubleshooting, check the Maps app settings or Apple’s support site. Always test a short offline route before a big trip to ensure everything loads smoothly!
