Google Maps allows you to download specific map areas in advance for offline use, which is perfect for travel in areas with poor or no internet connectivity.
This feature works on both Android and iOS devices via the Google Maps app. Note that you’ll need an internet connection initially to download the maps, but once downloaded, you can navigate without it (with some limitations). The steps are nearly identical across platforms.
Step 1: Download an Offline Map
You can download a map for a specific place or select a custom area.
Option A: Download for a Specific Place
1. Open the Google Maps app on your Android phone/tablet or iPhone/iPad.
2. Search for a destination (e.g., “San Francisco”).
3. Tap the name or address at the bottom of the screen.
4. Tap More > Download offline map > Download.
Option B: Select Your Own Custom Area
1. Open the Google Maps app.
2. Tap your profile picture or initial in the top right > Offline maps.
3. Tap Select your own map.
4. Drag and zoom to adjust the rectangular area you want to download (it covers about 50km x 120km max, depending on zoom).
5. Tap Download.
Tips for Downloading:
• Downloads use Wi-Fi data and can be large (up to several hundred MB), so connect to Wi-Fi.
• Google may suggest maps based on your upcoming trips from Gmail or Google Calendar under “Recommended maps.”
• You can’t download maps in some countries due to restrictions on data or language support.
Step 2: Use the Offline Map for Navigation
1. Once downloaded, open the Google Maps app (no internet needed).
2. Search for a destination or enter a route as usual—the app will use the offline data if the entire route is within your downloaded area.
3. Start navigation; you’ll get turn-by-turn directions, but voice guidance works too.
Important Limitations:
• No real-time features: Offline mode doesn’t support traffic updates, alternate routes, transit (bus/train), bicycling, or walking directions.
• Route coverage: Navigation only works if the start, end, and full route are within the downloaded map. If not, you’ll need to re-download a larger area.
• Expiration: Offline maps expire (typically after 15 days to a year, depending on updates) and must be refreshed while online. Enable auto-updates to handle this.
• No searching businesses: You can’t search for nearby places (e.g., restaurants) offline—pre-plan routes.
• Maps are device-specific and not synced across devices.
Managing Your Offline Maps
• View/Delete/Update: Go to your profile > Offline maps to see your list. Tap a map to delete, rename, or update it.
• Auto-Update: In Offline maps settings, turn on Auto-update offline maps (requires Wi-Fi).
• Storage: Each map takes space—delete unused ones to free up room.
